Audiologist

William H. Shapiro is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology, and is Supervisor of Audiology at the New York University Cochlear Implant Center. He earned his Doctorate of Audiology from Arizona School of Health Sciences, A.T. Still University and has worked at New York University since 1984 where he has been involved with all aspects of diagnostic and rehabilitative audiology, including the dispensing of assistive hearing technology.

He leads a team of highly qualified Audiologists that provide excellent patient care.

NYU Cochlear Implant Center is one of the largest and most highly respected clinical and research cochlear implant centers in the world. We offer a full range of diagnostic, surgical, programming and rehabilitation services in a state-of-the-art facility by highly qualified expert clinical professionals. We provide services to all eligible hearing-impaired children and adults of all ages for evaluation to determine candidacy for a cochlear or brainstem implant.

The Cochlear Implant Center is one of only a few centers in the world that offer the option of placing the implant using local anesthesia with sedation, and our doctors are experts at performing this procedure.

We are proud members of the American Cochlear Implant Alliance, a nonprofit organization that works to advance access to the gift of hearing through cochlear implantation.

Hearing care services

Eligible hearing-impaired children and adults may choose NYU Langone’s Cochlear Implant Center for:

  • Evaluation to determine candidacy for a cochlear or auditory brainstem implant
  • Treatment plans for single-sided deafness
  • Treatment plans for ski-slope hearing loss
  • Surgery at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital
  • Preoperative and operating room radiologic studies to ensure correct device placement
  • Device choice and an explanation of Advanced Bionics, Cochlear®, and MED-EL devices
  • Both pre- and postoperative speech and language evaluation and therapy
  • Educational recommendations and support for children
  • Intraoperative device monitoring to ensure proper device function
  • Device programming by expert cochlear implant audiologists
  • Ongoing device and performance monitoring
  • Second-opinion evaluations and consultations
  • Troubleshooting for problems with implants
  • Bone-anchored hearing aids
